The role

As a succession lawyer you will advise clients on their estate planning and act for families in deceased estate administration.

Day to day you will:

  • Take instructions on Wills and estate plans, including blended families, business interests and testamentary trusts
  • Draft or settle Wills, testamentary trusts, enduring powers of attorney and enduring powers of guardianship
  • Advise on the risks in a plan, including family provision exposure and superannuation death benefit nominations
  • Act for executors and administrators from the grant application through to distribution
  • Work with our paralegals, who prepare documents from your instructions
  • Contribute to business development and to ContactsLaw, our in-house practice management software

About you

We're looking for a lawyer who can take carriage of a matter and drive it, works well with clients on succession-related matters and wants to build a career in this area. The ideal candidate will:

  1. be able to run a caseload of Wills, estate planning and deceased estate administration matters with limited supervision;
  2. be comfortable with technology and interested in using it well, including practice management software, document automation and AI tools, and willing to help us improve the way we work rather than wait to be told;
  3. take a practical approach to estate planning, including knowing when a structure is warranted and when it is not, and being able to tell a client their idea will not do what they want it to;
  4. lead a client meeting, bring a client back when they have gone off track and finish with a clear plan;
  5. communicate with clients clearly and with care, in writing and in person;
  6. be accurate and careful with detail, because in this work a mistake does not surface until the client has died and cannot explain what they meant;
  7. share our mission to simplify and solve legal problems, and our values: be kind, do things differently, strive for excellence.

Applicants with at least 2 years experience in succession law (contentious or non-contentious) will be highly regarded.

Remuneration

Salary will be commensurate with experience, reflecting your skills and your contribution to the firm.
